Light Up Lenin

The annual Lenin Lighting ceremony won’t be until Friday, December 3rd, but in the meantime the Fremont Chamber of Commerce is looking to spice things up for the Ol’ Comrade this year.

Every year on the first Friday in December, a light sculpture is placed atop Lenin’s head, and illuminated every night throughout December. The question this year: do we stick with the standard star, or go for something new? If someone comes up with a great new design by the end of this week (11/19) – and can execute it in roughly a week’s time – it will be installed a few days before the lighting ceremony on 12/3!

The Chamber is looking for potential artists to submit a sketch and costs to fremontfirstfriday@gmail.com by 5pm on Friday, November 19th.  A panel of judges will look over the entries American Idol-style and the winner will be notified on Saturday, November 20th. Fremont will reimburse the artist up to $500 for materials.

The only parameters to follow are that the piece must be Christmas-themed, must include LED lights and must be sturdy enough to hold up for future use. No papier-mâché, people. (The Christmas theme seems at odds with the non-denominational stance of years past, but I suppose that’s nitpickery).

Good luck!
