Congratulations to our sister site PhinneyWood.com, which has won a prestigious national journalism award for its Online Deadline Reporting (Independent) category covering one of the biggest local stories of last year: the Greenwood arson fires.

The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) announced the win for the Oct.23 “Three-Alarm Fire Destroys Greenwood Businesses.”

Doree Armstrong, who I had the pleasure of meeting while I was still at the P-I, wrote about the team effort involved in that story, including her and Dale Steinke of PhinneyWood, and Cory and Kate Bergman (a.k.a. the Geeky Swedes) of MyBallard. “We were on the scene moments after the call came in and posted updates throughout the day. We also received dozens of email tips and photos from PhinneyWood readers. So, this award is also a testament to the power of community journalism.”

The SPJ Sigma Delta Chi awards are judged by veteran journalists around the country. Judges went through more than 1,300 entries for awards covering online, newspaper, magazine, television and radio.
