Thousands expected on 4th with nowhere to ‘go’

The “4th of Jul-Ivar’s” fireworks show on Elliott Bay has been canceled, and that means one thing: there’s only one show in town, and it’s the Chase (formerly WaMu) Family 4th at Lake Union.

Police are expecting 10,000 to 15,000 more people to show up at Gasworks Park this year than in the past, says Jessica Vets, the director of the Fremont Chamber of Commerce. The Seattle Police Department is working on a plan for crowd control that stretches deep into Fremont, and Vets said she’s working on finding places for these extra people to “go.”

The Fremont Chamber and Wallingford Chamber are hoping area businesses will sponsor port-a-potties to be placed in the neighborhoods outside Gasworks. They want ten to twelve bathrooms so people don’t relieve themselves in people’s yards. Vets says that a business can decorate it (this is Fremont, after all) as long as they don’t do any permanent damage. “I don’t think there’s enough port-a-potty art out there in the world!” she joked. If you’re interested in sponsoring a port-a-pottie, you can email Jessica at director@fremont.com.
