Oh, what a way to wake up on a Saturday morning.
Thanks to a reader, we were on the scene about 15 minutes after a man — described by police as possibly having a mental illness — threw a brick into the window of a Fremont business, and authorities said, was taken into custody without incident on burglary charges.
Acting Sgt. Don Leslie told us that at 6:53 a.m., witnesses across the street of the business located at 3601 Fremont Ave. N. said they thought they saw someone shoot out the window to one of the glass doors facing the lunchroom of Group West Architects/Interiors (Suite 314).
The original call, Leslie said, indicated a man with a gun, so “Our radar was set a lot higher.” They found the suspect still standing there with a gun in one hand — a staple gun, that is. The staple gun was still just outside the business on the sidewalk, surrounded by broken glass.
Leslie said the suspect was originally going to be charged with just property damage, but open desk drawers and parts of an easel outside showed evidence of an intent to commit burglary.
Otherwise, it was quiet in downtown Fremont this morning, with patrons at Anytime Fitness next door working out, oblivious to the brief commotion next door and the alarm that finally turned off at 7:24 a.m.
