Lenin Lighting 2011 Photos

December 2nd, 2011 by master

A good time was had by all at the Lenin Lighting ceremony Friday night. The celebration featured live music by the Fremont Philharmonic, a Christmas carol sing-along with Our Beginning, treats courtesy of Mighty O Donuts, Pie and PCC Natural Market and of course a visit by the Fremont Santa.

We even celebrated the first Fremont Festivus, complete with an airing of the grievances, courtesy of Not A Number.

This year Lenin was adorned with a Merry Christmas necklace to go with his “double” Star of David crown. Just to make sure his major bases are covered.

Everyone’s favorite Russian Marxist revolutionary is getting ready for everyone’s favorite December holiday tradition. The Lenin Lighting!

Some news, updates and happenings in and around Fremont to be aware of…

Fremont’s Starbucks gets a great write-up and tons of photos over at Starbucks Melody.

The old Italia Motel at 4129 Aurora Ave. N. has now been boarded up and cleaned out.

Atsuko Tamura, president of Fremont action-sports gear retailer Evo, gets quoted in this article about the influx of snow in the Seattle area.

Over in Wallingford, the big Wallingford sign atop the QFC got lit up for the holidays.

Want some more photos of the Lenin Lighting? Here’s a slideshow for you.

The 46th Street Mural Project survey, which invites the community of Wallingford and Fremont, and users of the N 46th Street underpass to share their opinions of the newly completed mural, will close next week. Speak your mind ASAP in their survey.

Lenin Lighting 2010: Videos & Photos

December 3rd, 2010 by master

I spent my evening cheering as a Star of David was affixed to and lit up on top of Vladimir Lenin’s head. How bout you?

Here’s a video recap of Lenin Lighting 2010 followed by a couple photos. The event was enjoyed by a large crowd of Fremonsters, kids and pooches. Kudos to the Fremont Chamber of Commerce, MC Kirby Lindsay, the Rabbit Stew String Band and all of the sponsors for a great evening.

Send in any videos and photos you’d like to share as well.

Lenin Lighting & Fremont Art Walk Tomorrow

December 2nd, 2010 by master

Big day in Fremont tomorrow. First up, it’s the Lenin Lighting at 5:30 p.m. It’s recommended to get in the area by 5 in order to find a cozy spot.

If you’re not familiar, the thing we’re actually lighting is a neon red star that will sit on Lenin’s head. This year the star was fixed up by the good folks over at City Light Neon, who did the work as a donation to the community.

There will be live music courtesy of Rabbit Stew String Band and free refreshments: Peet’s coffee, sweetened mint tea, hot cocoa, and Mighty-O Donuts. Santa Claus will also be on hand handing out oranges. Why oranges? It’s Fremont, that’s why.

Check out Fremocentrist’s post on the event for more details on why you should attend.

Following the lighting, stick around town because the Fremont Friday Art Walk will officially be under way. Between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., some of your favorite stores, restaurants, hang-outs and coffee shops will be featuring live music, art, painting, videos, sculptures and a whole lot more. Check out the full list of participating places here along with what each of them is hosting.

The weather report calls for clouds with a chance of showers so be prepared. The events will go on rain or shine.

Lenin Lighting Kicks Off December’s Fremont Friday Art Walk

November 24th, 2010 by master

Would it be a traditional event in Fremont if we didn’t have our own spin on things? Everyone else can have their tree and menorah lightings, we’ll be lighting up our giant statue of a Russian dude, thank you very much. This year’s “Lenin Lighting” celebration is all set and ready to go for December 3rd:

Two of our local artists are creating a brand new light sculpture to adorn Lenin this year. Festivities run from 5-6pm in Lenin Square…we’ll have live music by Rabbit Stew String Band, and free refreshments such as Peet’s coffee and sweetened mint tea (for the kids), and Mighty-O Donuts! The neighborhood will welcome Santa bearing oranges for the kiddos, who then get to flip the switch to illuminate the statue around 5:30pm.

The lighting also kicks off the December Fremont First Friday Art Walk.  You can check out all the details of the event and the many venues involved here.

Light Up Lenin

November 17th, 2010 by master

The annual Lenin Lighting ceremony won’t be until Friday, December 3rd, but in the meantime the Fremont Chamber of Commerce is looking to spice things up for the Ol’ Comrade this year.

Every year on the first Friday in December, a light sculpture is placed atop Lenin’s head, and illuminated every night throughout December. The question this year: do we stick with the standard star, or go for something new? If someone comes up with a great new design by the end of this week (11/19) – and can execute it in roughly a week’s time – it will be installed a few days before the lighting ceremony on 12/3!

The Chamber is looking for potential artists to submit a sketch and costs to fremontfirstfriday@gmail.com by 5pm on Friday, November 19th.  A panel of judges will look over the entries American Idol-style and the winner will be notified on Saturday, November 20th. Fremont will reimburse the artist up to $500 for materials.

The only parameters to follow are that the piece must be Christmas-themed, must include LED lights and must be sturdy enough to hold up for future use. No papier-mâché, people. (The Christmas theme seems at odds with the non-denominational stance of years past, but I suppose that’s nitpickery).

Good luck!

Lenin gets lit

December 4th, 2009 by master

A small but sincere crowd braved tonight’s chilly evening to witness Lenin get lit, so to speak.

Santa Baby

Fremont’s own Santa Claus handed out tangerines to kids of all ages.  Royal Grinders provided hot chocolate for little ones, while Tully’s had a coffee tent set up for adults.

Turtleneck Dog

It was a brisk evening but this four-legged friend was dressed for the occasion.

Fremont Philharmonic

The Fremont Philharmonic kept things lively with Russian circus music.

Santa, Cashman & Elves

Funnyman Pat Cashman emceed the festivities.  He cracked that the real Lenin “would’ve hated an event like this”, which was subsequently met with cheers.

Lenin Lit

The flip of a switch – and help from a few little elves – turned on the lights designed by local home builders Logan’s Hammer.  Let the season begin!
